ARTIST STATEMENT Something Between Pop Surrealism and Fashion Illustration: Surreal, bold and theatrical, Gina Martynova fuses technical craftsmanship with a whimsical and eerie imaginary inner world. Her illustrations provoke simultaneously dark, inviting and dramatic imagery. She is inspired by unique patterns found in nature, fashion, music, Russian and European illustrators of the early 20th century, Japanese woodblock prints, Indonesian arts and crafts as well as Alexander Pushkin's fairytales and imaginary world folkore. The tension between the extreme detail and open/vast negative space is essential to her aesthetic and is borrowed from the Taoist perceptions of harmony in nature. The Starry style examines excess and transformation, their effects on human nature and portrayal in fairytales, history, fashion and art. The concept is derived from the artist’s desire to explore her heritage, having lived abroad all her life, to glimpse into what has subconsciously been imprinted on her soul. The collection aims to combine traditional oil portraiture with surreal and experimental watercolor; creating a dialogue between the meticulous detailing and free flowing whimsy. STARRY EYED GYPSY (STARRY) Starry started out as a doodle in notebooks. Her full name is actually 'Starry Eyed Gypsy' (On the Moon). She is a vagabond alien botanist, who travels around the Universe collecting different specimens of life and to explore new worlds. Of course Starry is an extension of me, my life and a way to translate my thoughts, beliefs and observations through art. It is my way to comunicate through a character and to simulate my inner world and imagery that I have been inspired by. Starry is a cultural fusion of aesthetics, philosophy and design. She is an alien botanist and explorer who arrives on Earth and finds herself immersed in juxtapositions, irony and different cultures, some which highly value indulgence and promote fame and material wealth. Excess is found abundant and thriving on this planet. |
